Our newest Residential Life staff

Candace Torrey joined Residential Life officially in early August. She had served in an interim role and was officially hired as the successful candidate for the Residential Life Office Assistant and Placement Coordinator. In this role, she will be responsible for coordinating early arrivals, managing room changes, and working with athletics on special placements. She will work closely with Barbara Baurmann and the student workers on the daily operation in our office. Candace served as a Resident Assistant and as a campus tour guide while at USD as an undergraduate student.

Terrence Shaw has been hired as the Community Director for Camino and Founders Halls. Terrence is originally from Milwaukee, WI and is an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He received a B.A. in Communication and Sociology from the University of Wisconsin - Parkside and a M.S.Ed. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has lived in St. Louis, MO for the previous two years where he worked at Saint Louis University as a Residence Hall Coordinator. He has experience working with LLC's and MAP-Works and worked in student affairs throughout his undergraduate, graduate, and professional experience, primarily in Residence Life and Career Services. Terrence will be joining the staff in the midst of RA training and we are looking forward to bringing his knowledge and experience to USD.

Become a Safe Space Ally Or Participate in SSA Refresher!

As we prepare for the upcoming academic year, we would like to extend an invitation to participate in one of the Safe Space Ally trainings being offered starting on Tuesday, August 13th. If you have been thinking about it, if you are new to USD, and/or if you would like to invite your staff to become a Safe Space Ally!

By displaying a Safe Space Ally placard in your working and/or living areas, you provide a visible marker of validation, support, and respect for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community as well as other potentially marginalized populations. Visit the Safe Space Ally web page http://www.sandiego.edu/safespaceallies to learn more about the program and to sign up for the training date of your choice.

Refresh your SSA Knowledge!

A SSA Refresher is being offered on Wednesday, October 9th from 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. that will assist you in strengthening your skills as an ally through the use of scenarios, discussion and review of terminology. By participating in the workshop, you will be better informed and educated on how to be an ally for LGBT and questioning people. You will learn how to provide supportive space and a sense of security to LGBT and questioning people, as well as refer out to other appropriate services. To sign up, email remt@sandiego.edu.

As is done with SSA trainings, refresher workshops can be scheduled around the availability of a group of eight or more people. A refresher session is designed for people who have already completed the SSA training.

"Greater Than Yourself" Retreat

Please encourage students to participate in the annual Greater Than Yourself (GTY) Retreat taking place Friday, September 27-Sunday, September 29, 2013 in Pine Valley. It is a free, two and a half day program bringing together a diverse set of students to explore personal awareness and identity, learn leadership concepts and strategies, and build campus relationships and alliances. Participants develop their knowledge of self and others, enhance their awareness of intergroup dynamics, and expand their “toolkits" of campus resources and involvement opportunities. Students return to campus relationships, organizations, and other areas with new knowledge to promote understanding and networks for action. The retreat is co-sponsored by the United Front Multicultural Center (UFMC) and the Student Leadership and Involvement Center (SLIC). Click here for additional information and to register.

"Run for Your Lives" Places Second!

The Student Health Center Team “Run for Your Lives” was the 2nd place winner in the USD HR Thrive Across America competition. There were only 10 “official” members of the team but we were ALL winners! Congratulations and keep up the “health-y” competition! (Team Captain, Maureen Kane)
