December 16, 2011 Message from the President Dear Students and Colleagues: Using email to send this message is, I realize, akin to using the pony express to deliver mail! Nonetheless, I want to take more than 140 characters to wish you a blessed and joyful holiday season. Many of you are in the midst of taking or waiting anxiously for the results of exams; others are tackling mountains of papers that need reading and correcting those exams. You all have worked so hard this year, so I am pleased that you will enjoy a well-deserved break. My simple wish for you is that the spirit of Christmas and of the Festival of Lights infuses you with joy and hope. The many images and symbols of the holiday season break through the darkness of winter and, for many, the darkness of their own lives. The Christ child whom we welcome at Christmas is the source of a great Light that continues to penetrate our world, offering us the greatest gift imaginable: His presence and love among us for all eternity. As you enjoy the blessings of this season with your family and friends, I ask that you consider the brothers and sisters of our wider community who suffer great anxiety and deprivation. Your generous outreach to them—through material gifts, through prayer, through the witness to their suffering—can also be a source of great light, great hope, and great love. May you experience an abundance of joy during the holidays and return to our university in 2012 refreshed and renewed! Merry Christmas! Mary E. Lyons, Ph.D. Women of Impact Luncheon Thank you to all who participated this year in honoring women of impact across campus! We recognized 64 incredible women. The 2011 Women of Impact are: 2011 Faculty Nominees, with winner Dr. Perla Myers (second from left) Holiday Volunteer Opportunities There is no better time to exercise and exemplify the university's core value of compassionate service like the holiday season.
