Thanksgiving Prayer

O Gracious God, we give you thanks for your overflowing generosity to us. Thank you for the blessings of the food we eat and especially for this feast today. Thank you for our home and family and friends, especially for the presence of those in our community. Thank you for our health, our work and our play. Please send help to those who are hungry, alone, sick and suffering war and violence. Open our hearts to your love. We ask your blessing through Christ your son. Amen.

International Survivors of Suicide Day

Throughout the semester, the Wellness Area has led the “Not on My Watch” campaign and partnered with many units across campus, including Associated Students, University Ministry, Residential Life and others, to develop Not on My Watch Week in October. While we received positive feedback regarding the events of this campaign, the work continues as we continue to enhance awareness and remove the barriers associated with seeking help and mental health concerns.

To continue this important conversation, we want to make you aware of an opportunity that not only enhances awareness and removes stigma but also promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion by providing support and understanding to those whose lives have been impacted by suicide.

Every November, survivors of suicide loss in our community, across the United States, and around the world come together for healing conferences in their communities and online for support and guidance. This year, USD is partnering with the San Diego chapter of the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention to host this event at the KIPJ.

Homelessness Immersion Experience in Washington, D.C.

Do you know any students who want to do something different with their spring break? Please recommend that they participate in the SLIC's Homelessness Immersion experience in Washington, DC during March 9-15, 2014!

They will spend three days volunteering at various shelters, soup kitchens, and food pantries that serve the homeless population and then we will participate in the Homeless Challenge Project sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless, which involves actually being homeless for 48 hours. This experience is being offered in conjunction with a 1-unit leadership course. The leadership course will meet before the trip to better understand the issues we could face during the trip and prepare for the trip and will meet after the trip to reflect and discuss any impact the trip has on our lives.

The class meetings will occur various Tuesdays from 1-2:15pm. There will be several fundraising opportunities and our hope is that by taking full advantage of these opportunities, students will not have to pay for this experience. More information about the class and the Homeless Challenge Project are available at The deadline to apply is Tuesday, November 26th, 2013 at 5pm.

Employee Development Committee: Weekly Self-Care Tips

Weekly Self-Care Tip #7: Create a “greenhouse” at work. Factors ideal for growth include:

    1. Taking on leadership opportunities that promote a healthy other-care vs. self-care balance.
    2. Getting social support from peers and engaging in meaningful human contact.
    3. Receiving other-care from mentors, supervisors, or bosses.
    4. Mentoring others.
    5. Having fun!  Learning how to be professional and playful with students. Telling jokes and enjoying a good laugh.
