About the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering
Developing Our Future Engineers
The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering offers a supportive, well-rounded education that inspires students to innovate, create, and ultimately, make a difference by practicing real-world engineering. The school develops thinkers and leaders who have solid technical, communication and problem-solving skills balanced with broad perspective to make things happen locally and globally.
Our goal is to develop a future of engineers who will take on society's challenges and opportunities in socially, ethically and professionally responsible ways.
The USD Engineering department was founded in 1987 with just a handful of students and two faculty. During the last quarter century, the program has steadily grown in size and stature. Today, there are approximately 21 full-time faculty and 505 students.
In 2012, the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering was founded with a generous gift by San Diego philanthropist Darlene Marcos Shiley. Her extraordinary gift transformed the department into a USD School of Engineering with upgraded facilities and studio space, new faculty and student scholarship support. We are tremendously grateful to Mrs. Shiley for helping us develop talented engineers who can contribute to our local and global growth and vitality.
Chell A. Roberts is the founding dean of the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering at the University of San Diego.
Well-Rounded Engineering Programs
The USD Engineering programs are nine semester programs of study leading to both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree. We currently offer programs in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Our undergraduate programs offer the following:
- A Dual BS/BA Degree: The programs develop well-balanced, communicative professionals through the dual BS/BA degree, which combines and intensive technical education and a broad liberal arts education.
- ABET Accreditation: All of the programs are accredited by the ABETand are highly rated among non-doctoral granting engineering programs by US News and World Report.
- Dedicated Labs: The school provides dedicated, flexible space for designing and innovating, including outstanding laboratory facilities for undergraduate engineering instruction and overseen by faculty.
- Personalized Education: With small classes, accessible faculty and a curriculum that emphasizes preparation for work in industry and the development of professionalism and values, students receive a highly personalized, relevant education.
Get to know our engineering faculty! They are a talented and passionate group of engineers with diverse interests and backgrounds. Not only do they make themselves accessible to students and open to discussions, but they also have won awards and accolades, published numerous research papers, volunteer in the community and in professional societies and are thrilled to challenge students with open-ended engineering problems.
