College of Arts and Sciences: While You Were Away ...

Welcome back, Toreros! We have missed you a TON, and we hope that you’ve missed us just as much! While you were away on your summer adventures, USD was busy undergoing our biggest makeover EVER. As you walk on campus, you will quickly notice some drastic changes (i.e. Paseo de Colachis, aka the best quad ever). But if you take a closer look, there are some more subtle changes that have taken place around campus… Still not seeing it? That’s okay, we are here to help!

5. Statue of San Diego de Alcalá Relocated

This statue used to greet students as they entered Copley Library. The new home of San Diego de Alcalá (also known as St. Didacus) is in Plaza de San Diego next to the Maher fountain — you can’t miss him!

4. Rededication of the Kumeyaay Garden

Although this garden was here before (overlooking Tecolote Canyon and Mission Bay), it was recently rededicated to honor indigenous plants and the Kumeyaay people’s connection to San Diego. All are welcome to attend the Kumeyaay Garden dedication ceremony on Friday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Plaza Mayor and the Kumeyaay Garden. The event will include bird singing, storytelling, ethnobotany tours, Kumeyaay cultural activities, an art exhibition, and an opportunity to see the garden’s newly erected arch.

3. Maher Rose Garden Makeover

The rose garden behind Maher Hall received some sprucing up this summer! This hidden gem is the perfect place to chill out before class or catch up on some last-minute reading.

2. San Diego College for Women Plaque Revealed

This plaque has been a part of the façade of Founders Hall for over 60 years (before we officially became USD in 1972!), but it was previously hidden behind large bushes. After our campus remodel, the plaque is now in plain sight! Although the words have faded, this plaque serves as a reminder of the university’s roots and how far we’ve come.

1. New Patio Furniture Along Paseo de Colachis

We’re excited to report that there are LOTS of new places to sit on the west side of campus. Tables and chairs surround the grassy quad on Paseo de Colachis giving you many options of where to relax between classes or get some homework done.
